FAQ

Does this certification enable me to practice mold inspection/ remediation in any state?

Our mold certification courses will teach you the skills to work as a Mold Inspector and/or Mold Remediation Contractor in all states.  However, a few states require that you have a state license to perform the work.  Not all states have the same requirements and they can vary significantly by state.  For example you may need to pass a state exam and/or meet educational, experience, and other requirements.

Click here to see what regulations apply in your state.

How long does it take to complete the course?

The average person spends 15 – 20 hours on each course depending on prior knowledge, study habits, and determination. When you feel ready, each final exam should take approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete. The inspection project, as required for the CMI certification may take an extra 5 – 10 hours.

After I receive my certification am I adequately prepared to perform my first mold inspection or remediation?

Yes. Most of our students are ready to perform their first inspection or remediation project with confidence. There is a complete section in our course materials that walks you through the inspection and remediation process, step-by-step. In addition, we’re available and have a toll-free phone line set-up to address any questions you may have.  And as a MICRO member you have the benefit of discussing your project with us or taking advantage of a 30 minute free consultation with Jack Dennison.

How much money should I expect to spend on start-up equipment and supplies?

It’s essential that a mold inspector and/or remediation contractor has the tools necessary to properly perform the job correctly and professionally. Equipment prices can vary significantly on a particular item depending on the features of each.  But realistically you can purchase state of the art, brand-name equipment for less than $5,000 directly from the MICRO store.  As with any business, you’ll need to consider other equipment such as computers, office equipment, trucks, etc. as well as how you’re going to market and administer your business.

To be a Mold Inspector do I need a degree in science or a construction background in order to understand the material and laboratory results?

No. As a Certified Mold Inspector your goal is to professionally determine the extent, if any, of the existence of unhealthy levels of mold in a residential or commercial building. Although any knowledge of science or construction would be helpful, your job is to gather samples, determine sources of moisture intrusion, and let the lab evaluate the level of contamination.

Which laboratory should I use?

There are numerous laboratories equipped to perform indoor air quality and fungal analysis. However, only those recognized by the American Industrial Hygiene Association should be considered. Good quality analysis and reports are essential points to consider, in addition to price. Do your research and we’re always willing to help you make this important decision.

Where do I get my testing equipment and supplies?

There are numerous companies offering inspection and remediation equipment and supplies and you have to look no further than the MICRO Store. Our experience in the industry has helped us find not only the best sources of equipment but the best prices as well. Knowing where to order equipment and supplies will save you both time and money. MICRO members get the benefit of “guaranteed lowest cost”.

Is there really a market for such a new and specialized profession?

Absolutely! Mold has been described as the “asbestos of today”. The EPA has estimated that 50 – 60% of homes have mold problems. The industry will continue to grow as the public becomes more aware of the issues associated with mold.

How can my business capture a share of the mold inspection / remediation market?

It is important that your marketing efforts not only promote your business name, but also educate homeowners about your company’s ability to identify and eliminate the dangers of mold. One of the best and least expensive ways to market your business is to create your own website. A professionally designed website is an essential component of every company’s marketing efforts.

Prices starting at $299.00 - Why so inexpensive?

Since MICRO offers a correspondence style course we are able to keep our costs to a minimum. No expensive conference rooms, speaker fees, etc. The savings is passed directly on to our customers.

However, we offer live classes as well, competitively priced to meet your specific learning needs.

What does a typical mold inspection entail?

Residential homes and apartments will comprise the bulk of the inspections performed by a certified mold inspector. Typically included is a complete visual inspection of the structure and any sampling as deemed necessary. A typical mold inspection usually takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours on an average size home, not including travel, processing samples, preparing an inspection report, and taking care of other administrative tasks.

What can I expect in a typical day as a certified mold inspector?

While actual mold inspections will comprise a significant portion of your time, many other activities are necessary. Finances, equipment, advertising, marketing and a website will all receive attention throughout the day. As your business grows, you can begin to hire outside assistance for office work or inspections. As with any business start-up, more hours will be required of you in the beginning as you become established.

What is mold inspection training?

Our mold inspection certification course will walk you through every aspect of the mold inspection business, from a visual assessment to air sampling, to determining the cause of the moisture intrusion, and touch on how to market your business.

What experience is necessary to become a Certified Mold Remediation Contractor?

Certainly, a background in the construction industry will give someone a certain advantage when working as a Certified Mold Remediation Contractor. However, in most cases our students have varied backgrounds, and the majority have backgrounds and training other than construction.

What type of equipment will I need to operate as a Certified Mold Remediation contractor?

Much of your equipment needs will depend on the complexity of the projects you expect to work on. As a minimum you will need a portable air scrubber, HEPA  vac, cleaners and disinfectants, personal protective equipment, in addition to normal carpentry type tools. Your minimum initial investment will range from $2,000-$3,000. Comparing the mold industry with other types of businesses, the capital required for a start-up mold remediation venture is rather small, and the profits brought in through remediation work will quickly offset your initial costs.

Excellent Training

I want to let you know that your program was unexpectedly helpful. Not being far removed from my college days I had low expectations in anticipation. Having worked in the “mold industry” for several years I thought this program was simply an insurance formality that was not going to teach me anything. I am writing you to let you know how wrong I was. You have an extremely well polished and informative teaching tool on your hands. You can see that the time and effort was put into your program to make sure nothing was being overlooked. I will be a repeat customer!

Helping communities

Thank you so much, this course was absolutely phenomenal! I gained knowledge that I’m already using in providing help to our communities down here in Southern Louisiana as we press forward in recovering from last August’s devastating Flood.

Outstanding course!

I thought the CMI training and testing was excellent. I’m a certified Building Analyst and Healthy Home Evaluator and I wish the same level of online training was available for that!

I’ll recommend this course.

I am constantly pursuing courses for CEU credit in various disciplines having been in general contracting, electrical contracting, home inspections, mold inspections, and mold remediation for more than 40 years.

Recently I had the pleasure of taking the MICRO Certified Mold Remediation Contractor course. It was one of the finest study courses that I have taken either on-line or in live class. It was professionally presented and very thorough in substance. I would highly recommend this course to anyone contemplating entrance in mold remediation or as a CEU for an on-going program. Many thanks for MICRO’s valuable contribution to the industry.
